June 14, 2011Biking in Spain – Girona to Figueres

Biking in Spain Girona to FigueresIt's day one and we have no idea what's ahead of us! The bike I reserved is way too big (Riopels are more torso than legs apparently) so we end up renting a mountain bike instead. This means that we have to transfer all of my gear on to Myka and André's bikes since mine doesn't have racks. Off we go, the fantastic trio, straight into the mountains of Girona!

Biking in Spain Figueres to CadaquesBye bye Figueres, Cadaques here we come! After a hard day of climbing, we expect today to be much easier. Well, we are in for quite a surprise! On the map, everything looks fine and dandy... In reality, Cadaque is well tucked away, surrounded by steep mountains. Now we finally get the meaning of Costa Brava, which means wild coast in Spanish.

May 31, 2011Tips for Biking in Spain

My Marvelous Bike Trip in Costa Brava, Spain

Tips for Biking in SpainIf you love the concept of relaxing in all-inclusive hotels, and the most you’ll walk is from your beach chair to the bar stool, then this trip is NOT for you! If on the other hand you are a decently active person who isn’t scared of the unknown, then I highly suggest going the route less traveled. Sure you’ll be stinky at times, your ass will be somewhat sore from all the riding and you’ll be so hungry you’ll feel like passing out. But it will be the trip of your lifetime. Here’s how it goes.

January 04, 2011My Top 5 Women’s Winter Boots

Winter has arrived!

My Top 5 Women’s Winter Boots

Downtown with my car during this wonderful season isn't always easy. I put on my wannabe boots, and venture reluctantly outside with my shovel in hand, trying to find my white car in the snow bank. An hour later, my cheeks are red from the cold, my hands are frozen and what’s worse, my feet are wet. I mutter to myself two things: first, I really am in need of REAL winter boots, and second, why do I need a car during winter?! This article will attempt to answer the first topic. Which boot will make me a Snow Cinderella this winter?

My Top 5 Women’s Winter Boots
Can you guess which one of these is my current boot?

At first glance, these three boots seem more or less the same. The middle one is the one I wear currently. Apart from appearance, it has none of the technical qualities that I am looking for. After a long analysis, here are my top 5 winter boots for women. If you want to learn more about the criterions, may I suggest Max Altitude’s terrific article for the good choice of a winter boot. He focuses on men’s footwear, but the determining factors are the same. The qualities to look out for in order to have a warm winter: insulation, protects against water, have soles that stop you from slipping even when it’s really cold out. Since these boots all have these features, I will concentrate on what makes each one of them unique.

November 27, 2010Painting in The Great Outdoors: Mark Gustav Zimmerl’s Vernissage

From the breathtaking beauty of a golden sunrise to the grandeur of the snow-capped mountain peaks, nature can be a true inspiration by its raw beauty and splendor. Last week, I had the pleasure to visit Mark Gustav Zimmerl’s vernissage, who bases his work on various natural landscapes.

November 24, 2010A Finely Polished Jewel: Arc’teryx Epsilon SV Hoody tested by Véro

What is up outdoor people!

My name is Véro, and I have recently started working at Altitude-sports.com in the awesome marketing department. As my favorite mug portrays, I am a sports junky; I have played soccer since I am a kid, flag football, and competitive volleyball, done cross country running and skiing, to name a few.

A Finely Polished Jewel: Arcteryx Epsilon SV Hoody tested by Véro

Although I love outdoor sports, all my life, I have despised the feeling of being cold. I often blame this on my half-asian warm blood, but having just entered the wonderful world of outdoor apparel, I have discovered that the culprit is none other than my ill-advised outfits. Pouncing around with my midriff half exposed as a consequence of my stylish garments, wearing cotton base layers and faux suede winter boots (that can hardly be qualified as boots), I am the nightmare of any outdoor enthusiast. Fortunately, working in an outdoor company has allowed me to discover the magical benefits of technical wear, especially when I am outside in Fall playing my favourite sport: ultimate frisbee. For this review, I will be testing out the Arcteryx Epsilon SV Hoody in the cold, rain and wind.

September 03, 2010How to Wash Your Down Jacket?

Ok, so you dropped a few Benjamins (or Sir Robert Borden if your flag has a maple leaf on it) on your sweet down jacket. You, my friend, are rocking the party that rocks the body. And that party is called the streets. Turning heads, you're smoking hot both figuratively and literally and everyone knows it.

But then, you also end up dropping some mustard on it. Oh dear. I don't know of too many stains that make you look cool, but mustard certainly isn't one of them. That's when you come see me for help. The truth is that mustard stains are a little intense for little old me. Here are some general washing instructions :

  1. Use Granger’s Downwash.
  2. Use a front-loading washing machine (to avoid damaging the down baffles as well as the jacket).
  3. Tumble-dry at low heat with 6 to 8 tennis balls in socks in order not to dirty the coat.

Tip: if you see that the water is no longer beading (making little water droplets) on the fabric, apply a spray-on water repellent to your washed jacket while it is still wet.

* Always be sure to check the manufacturer label for proper care instructions, as these may vary.
