Max Altitude

I’ve been part of the Altitude Sports family since early 2008. I’m in charge of the marketing chapter of this beautiful story. Although I enjoy many outdoor sports, I’m far from being an expert when it comes to training tips or forest survival. However, I do love the products we offer. I put them to the test all year round in Montreal, as well as during my travels. That’s why I want to share my impressions and tips concerning the urban use of these products.

The Flexigloo in line at the Musée Pointe-à-Callière

For the second year in a row, this mobile animated shelter provided some warmth at the festival’s peak – this long winter night filled with cultural activities. The Flexigloo is an event concept designed to shelter festival goers while they’re waiting outside or going to and from different activities. Once inside the igloo, people are entertained with a good dose of funny Nordic tales and a goblet of chocolate chai. The actual igloo and the interactions among the Iglooite tribe are amusing enough in themselves.

January 18, 2010My Top 5 Men’s Winter Boots

Lendemain de tempête à Montréal

The road on the way to work this morning

The morning after a snow storm in Montreal leaves you with the same problem year after year: do I buy insulated boots, or continue to wear my wanna-be boots that leak, or worse my shoes? Many of us think we don’t need winter boots in the city because there’s a lot of snow and everything is close. I admit it: until last year I was one of those people...

After buying a good pair of boots, I would never spend another day in wet socks. The five boots reviewed here all have a waterproof layer that keeps your feet dry when walking through even the biggest slush puddles (very common in the city). The rubber on the soles is softer than those on regular uninsulated boots. This keeps the boot from slipping, as snow tires do, even in the coldest conditions. The average person going to work in the city on public transit walks on enough icy sidewalks to need this kind of sole. What’s more, the treads are specially designed to keep snow from collecting on the bottom of the boot and high quality insulation keeps your feet warm. These boots are made for urban life as much as for participating in your favourite winter sport. I chose boots with a classic look: ones that won’t make you look like Bernard Voyer when you go to have a drink with friends. Tempting isn’t it?

1. Men's Merrell Chameleon Thermo 8 WTPF Synthetic Boots 159,99$
Merrell Chameleon Thermo 8 WTPF Homme

Withought a doubt, the Chameleon is THE number one classic boot for the Altitude staff. One out of every two employees has this boot, and I am one of them. The Chameleon is well insulated with 200g of Polartec and 400g of Primaloft. It is the warmest out of the McMurdo and the B52 (see below). I especially like its aggressive Vibram sole. The molded rubber heal counter is for easily attaching snowshoes. When worn with pants, its rugged look has a simple style. I particularly like the exterier material which repels calcium. The proof: after a year of wear, Alex Lapointe’s boots still look like new.

December 09, 2009One Day Deal : 24h and it’s gone!

Hey everyone,

Before explaining this little event that’s going on at Altitude, I just want to promise that I won’t be burdening the blog too often with ads like this. The blog’s goal is simply to share our opinion and information on different outdoor topics that we care about. So that was my apology. That being said, I think the One Day Deal will be great for many of you, dear outdoor lovers.

Sur quel produit tombera le rabais d'un jour demain? Cheezy... je sais!

On which product will the One Day Deal fall tomorrow? Cheesy... I know!

November 13, 2009The North Face Redpoint Optimus vs. Arc’teryx Atom LT Hoody

Greetings!

This week I decided to treat myself and talk to you about two of our favourite jackets here at Altitude Sports. All the employees have at least one or the other, if not both. I have both. Made for men and women, these two coats are lightweight, synthetically insulated, and great for fall, spring or even winter if you’re often moving from inside to outside during the day.

Synthetic Insulation

The North Face Redpoint Optimus Jacket became an employee favourite a couple years ago, when we first discovered Primaloft, the best synthetic insulation on the market and the closest imitation of down available. Click here for more information on the company, which also makes insulation for your home! Well-loved because it is very breathable, very light, dries quickly, and efficiently stores your body’s generated heat, this insulation regulates body temperature during drastic temperature changes, such as going from inside to outside. What’s more, a thinner layer of Primaloft is required to obtain the same warmth as down and it keeps you warmer even when wet or damp.

With winter coming, everyone is starting to shop around for a warm winter coat. But the big question is: which one will keep you the warmest without making you look like an abominable snowman? Today’s article highlights for you two coats that meet these important criteria: the Gotham Jacket by The North Face and the Chilliwack Parka by Canada Goose.

Last winter I answered a lot of questions from many clients on Altitude-sports.com, who wanted to know the differences between these two very similar models, their style and their characteristics. With an urban look, these hip-length jackets are insulated with down and made for men and women. They have plenty of pockets, fur around the hood, and rib-knit cuffs that keep out the wind. One last point before we get into the heart of the matter: down is a very effective insulator, and even though there are other synthetic options such as, Primaloft and fleece, it is still the best for those who don’t stand up very well to the cold.

October 22, 2009Four Classic Down Jackets for Men Reviewed

This week I decided to proceed with a review of four classic down jackets for men. Even though each one of these models was made for braving extreme cold, their urban look makes them excellent city coats. Anybody who has waited at the bus stop for twenty minutes in Québec’s bone-chilling winter winds will understand the advantages of a good coat. The four models under review are: The North Face McMurdo Parka, The North Face Ice Jacket, the Canada Goose Expedition Parka and the Canada Goose Ontario Parka.

Where They’re Made

Many people are initially surprised by the difference in price between these two brands. I don’t really like to repeat or quote myself, but for the benefit of the cause here is an explanation from my previous article: Canada Goose is made in Canada, whereas The North Face (in the case of the McMurdo Parka and the Ice Jacket) are made in China.

Click here for more information in my most recent article: The North Face Gotham vs. the Canada Goose Chilliwack (in French).

The Down

After trying them last winter, I have to say they’re all very warm: the kind of jacket good for walking around outside in, but that needs to be taken off on the bus or in the metro. The differences between each one are small in detail. For example, the Expedition has more down than the Ontario. The North Face Ice Jacket and the McMurdo Parka have the same amount of insulation. The down used in both the Canada Goose jackets is white duck down with a fill power of 625, while the two North Face Jackets are filled with goose down with a fill power of 550. In my opinion, the difference between the two types of duvet is too small to cause any hesitation. Read more about these Canada Goose and The North Face jackets and parkas
