Autumn is probably the hardest season for dressing your kids. Some days start out chilly but by noon the day is reminiscent of July or August. It’s raining and windy one day and sunny and clear the next. Your best bet to ensure your kids are prepared to enjoy long stretches outside is to layer up and choose materials carefully. Altitude carries the best brands for keeping your kids cozy and dry and not too hot – everything you want for the months of Fall.
Here are a few of our favourites and why:
On the warmer autumn days, these will be all you need. Thin breathable fabric that sits close to their skin so they can jump and move and play unhindered. When it gets cooler, add a top layer for added warmth. For kids and youth, take your pick of Helly Hansen’s cute patterned base layers or Burton’s fleece set. For wee ones, check out Patagonia’s base layer set.
Sweater season is here! When it’s not too cool, a simple sweater over a base layer is all they’ll need for outerwear. Kids will be cozy hiking, apple picking, and playing at school in one of these cute sweaters. We love the Burton hoodie, Fjällräven wool sweater, and the girl’s Icebreaker long sleeve zip (which doubles as a light weight jacket).
Light Jackets and Vests:
It’s not freezing yet, but the wind can be harsh in the Autumn months. Windbreakers should be thin enough to add on top of a sweater without overheating your child, with the goal of deflecting wind. Most windbreakers work for all off seasons, so keep it for Spring and Summer too. Vests keep the most important part of the torso – the heart – warm and leave the arms free to play and explore. Check out the Flurry Wind Hoodie for big kids, by The North Face and the matching Toddler Flurry Wind Hoodie for little ones. For vests, have a look at The North Face Girl’s Reversible Vest.
Autumn is a wet season, but there’s no reason your kids should miss out on the great outdoors! Get them the right gear and they’ll still spend hours outside using up their seemingly endless energy and having fun. Altitude carries several completely waterproof options, that parents will love. Toddlers will be dry and cozy in The North Face Tailout Rain Jacket, and bigger kids will love the Girl’s Zipline Rain Jacket and matching Boy’s model.
Make sure your kids have waterproof rain boots for the muddy wet season ahead. Kamik and Bogs won’t let you down. For hiking and outdoor play on dry days, you’ll want shoes with proper support that will last. We love the Kid’s Hedgehog Hiker by The North Face for outdoors, and the Kid’s Sk8 HiZip by Vans for school. If your kids are dressed properly, Autumn outings will be the best of the year. The weather may be unpredictable, but it’s nature’s last hurrah before the cold weather comes, so get out there with your family and enjoy it!
