Black Diamond. Black Diamond Lightweight ScreenTap Gloves Reviewed

As I work in the photo/videography industry and love outdoors, I often find myself in contexts where I want to take a picture or answer an email while being in the mountains, with a wind blowing in my face and temperature dropping below zero. That’s why I don’t leave home anymore without the Black Diamond Lightweight ScreenTap Gloves. It’s a must to have in your accessory drawer for chilly adventures. Finally a pair of gloves that allows you to use your cell phone in winter without freezing your hands!

Our review of this product
9 / 10

The pros are:

  • Allows the use of touch screens in cold weather without freezing your hands
  • Good dexterity
  • Polar insulation on the top that keeps the heat
  • Neutral look

The cons are:

  • Seams on the fingertips that make navigation on touch screens less precise

I tested the Lightweight ScreenTap gloves while going backcountry skiing, snowshoeing and walking my dog around town and I was never disappointed. These lightweight gloves fit into any coat pocket and are convenient for sports, snow removal or even as an insulating layer under mittens in colder weather.

The beauty of the thing is that they allow you to use your cell phone without having to take off your gloves. This may not be extraordinary to you, but in my case, it was a revelation! The stretch fabric makes the fit quite perfect, allowing great dexterity and comfort. What a joy to remove the skins under your skis after a climb or adjust your snowshoes without freezing your hands with ease of movement as if you had no gloves!

The only flaw I find is that the seam that connects the top polar layer to the conductive fabric on the underside of the glove is on the tip of the finger. This has the effect of making navigation on a touchscreen less accurate than with the finger directly, as the contact surface is distorted by the seam a bit too wide.

I still strongly recommend these gloves that can be used in a variety of contexts. Be careful though, they are so light that you have to be on the lookout so as not to misplace them!

To all those who, like me, are not so anxious that winter ends: see you on the slopes!
