Buff, Castelli, cycling, Garneau, POC. How to Layer for an Enjoyable Fall Bike Ride

Riding your bike in the fall is much different than riding in the summer months. The air is crisp and fresh, the scenery changes and you’re generally wearing more layers. Some regions will be graced with milder fall temperatures where you can get away with wearing your summer cycling kit until winter hits. In other regions, that isn’t the case. Don’t let cold weather keep you from enjoying your bike rides and simply learn how to layer appropriately

Cycling in Temperatures Between 10°C & 15°C

When fall starts, there are generally a few sunny, warm days left before the crisp temperatures settle in. If you’re setting out for a bike ride on one of these days, you can easily get away with your usual cycling kit without adding many extra layers at all.

If you’re the type of person who often finds yourself feeling very cold, a light long sleeve or jacket would be a good addition.

Keep in mind that cycling, as opposed to running, will feel like the temperatures are slightly cooler as you will be feeling more wind because you are going at a faster speed than by running on foot.

Cycling in Temperatures Between 5°C & 10°C

Once you reach the peak of fall, the cooler temperatures are more prominent and it’s finally time to hang up the summer cycling kit. While the temperatures may read 10°C, with the wind while cycling, it can feel much colder so a few extra layers are ideal for comfort.

Choose to layer up with a light jacket or a long sleeve on the top of a base layer or moisture wicking shirt and opt for leggings instead of shorts on the bottom. If it’s cool but not cool enough for a jacket or tights, arm and leg warmers are a great addition. These fit tight and eliminate having baggy layers blowing in the wind and reducing your aerodynamics.

In the cooler temperatures, you can also trade the fingerless gloves for full finger gloves to keep your hands warm.

Cycling in Temperature Between 0°C & 5°C

5°C looks okay on a screen but when you add the wind chill while biking down the road, this can feel much colder. In these temperatures where you can see your own breath when you exhale, warm layers are crucial.

Pair long tights with a base layer top, jacket and maybe even a vest to keep your core warm. Always be sure to pick styles with slim, athletic fits so you aren’t being slowed down from excess materials catching the wind.

Keep your extremities warm and don’t forget your head too. Opt for those full finger gloves, pick a neck warmer and a toque that is breathable and quick drying and thin enough to fit under your helmet

When it comes to cycling in cooler temperatures, everyone has their preferences. Some people find themselves to be warmer than usual and vice versa. The biggest thing is to remember that once you get moving, you will feel warmer but the wind chill is a factor so layer accordingly.

Another important factor to keep in mind before embarking on a fall ride is that there are fewer daylight hours. Therefore, you must dress in reflective clothing and pack along a light as well. There are multiple cycling lights available that can either be mounted to your bike or your helmet. Whichever light you choose, it never hurts to be prepared for the worst.
