The future is here, and it’s lightweight, waterproof and more breathable than ever. On October 1st The North Face released its new technology, and it’s already turning heads. The North Face spent countless hours in the lab and on the mountains, developing their new technology called FUTURELIGHT. Designed with the help of athletes, this revolutionary technology takes outerwear to the next level by finding a way to make waterproof membranes even more breathable. We got an exclusive first look at this revolutionary material when we attended the summit in Zermatt, and now we present the FUTURELIGHT collection that’s just landed on Altitude Sports.

What is FUTURELIGHT?

FUTURELIGHT, if The North Face has their way, will finally overtake GORE-TEX as the most breathable, waterproof membrane. This has always been a challenge for makers of outerwear. For a membrane to be waterproof, it needs to be able to stop water from getting through. The issue has been doing this while remaining breathable, and durable. The North Face has found the solution: FUTURELIGHT.

The Science Behind Futurelight

The North Face dug deep and after years spent testing their designs with athletes in the harshest conditions, they found a way to rework the membrane to allow air to escape, while completely stopping rain and snow from entering. This was done using a process called nanospinning. The semi-randomized process deposits a polyurethane solution onto a surface where it’s collected to create the membrane. Once the first prototypes were completed, the team at The North Face sent them out into the fields to be tested over 400 days by their team of athletes. The ultra-thin nanomembrane performed exceptionally well in various climates. The result – the next step in the evolution of outerwear.

FUTURELIGHT 2019 Collection

The North Face applied the membrane to three collections for the Fall-Winter 2019 season. The Summit Series, Steep Series, and Flight Series each serve a special purpose – total protection against the elements without diminishing performance.
