Text by: Kelsey Begg

Like any season, winter is full of a variety of activities and a variety of styles; fashionable and not. There are winter jackets for skiing and snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing and even cruising around town or checking out the outdoor ice rink near your home. No matter the activity you choose, there’s the perfect winter jacket for each!

Because not everyone is an avid skier or snowboarder and although you may be, you still have an additional winter coat for other occasions, here are some of my favourite ski and snowboard jackets, urban winter jackets and insulating jackets which are great for a mid layer.

Top 5 Urban Winter Jackets

For those late night dinner reservations and cold winter commutes, there’s nothing worse than a coat that isn’t quite warm enough to combat against the winter temperatures. In past years, winter parkas were known for their boxy and bulky appearance and although very warm, were not the most flattering. But winter jackets and coats have changed! There are plenty of sophisticated and sleek looking styles that will keep you comfortably warm when the temperatures drop and still look as fashionable.

Here Are My Favourites:

1. Arc’teryx Veilance Monitor Down Jacket

A thigh-length coat made in waterproof GORE-TEX® Pro and insulated with European grey goose down, the Monitor Down parka is a new addition but surely one of the favourites. It has been described as the warmest coat offered by Arc’teryx Veilance and will do everything but leave you cold this winter season! The jacket is waterproof and breathable so you can enjoy the warm insulation without worries of sweating or being uncomfortably warm. There is also a notched rear vent for added ventilation. The Monitor Down parka is the parka of choice for men from Arc’teryx this winter. You’ll know as soon as you try it on that it’s your favourite.

4. Canada Goose Langford Parka

The Langford parka offers an elegant and clean look and is perfect for the frigid commute along icy sidewalks and snow-blown roads. Stylish features such as the military buttons and pocket placement give this jacket an appealing urban look while offering convenient storage for your items such as your phone, wallet and keys. The Shelby parka is the perfect match for the urban fellow who wants warmth and style in one jacket.

Top 3 Insulating Jackets

Sometimes the winter graces us with some clear-blue-skies-and-sunshine days where a parka may be a bit too much. On days like these where the temperatures are low but not too low, a simple insulated jacket can easily do the trick. These jackets are also great and most often paired with a waterproof shell and used as a mid layer. Whatever the use may be, whether it is down or synthetic insulation, these jackets are small and light but they pack the heat!

Wear it on the hill for insulation, as a warm layer while belaying at the rock wall or a cozy layer for an autumn walk in the park.

3. Mountain Hardwear StretchDown Hooded Jacket
