They always say that, eh? Best brands this, best brands that. Well, hold on to your seatbelt (please don't be reading this while driving), imma tell you what I mean by the best brands. Bon, c'est qui qui n'aime pas les ventes? Soyez heureux alors parce qu'on en a fait une grosse. Titanesque même. Oh que oui, jusqu'à 50% sur les meilleures marques. Mais quelles sont ces meilleures marques? Eh bien, en aucun ordre particulier, c'est Arc'teryx, The North Face, Patagonia, Icebreaker, Mammut, Mountain HardWear, Merrell, Bogs, Burton, Osprey, Gregory, Black Diamond. Pas pire, hein?

Je suis entré en Suisse par Bâle, cette ville à l'intersection des frontières entre la France, l'Allemagne, et la Suisse. Pas mal d'usines chimiques, mais quelques coins appréciables néanmoins! En particulier, les ponts sont toujours l'occasion d'avoir une belle vue du milieu urbain. J'aime bien voir comment, dans chaque ville, la rivière se trouve canalisée, en quelques sortes domptée.

Je me suis ensuite dirigé vers Genève, en faisant deux étapes. La première en camping sauvage, en lisière d'un bois au sud-ouest de Bienne. J'ai eu droit là bas à un bien joli ciel crépusculaire! Qui a dit qu'on ne pouvait pas faire de camping sauvage en Suisse? La polizei n'est pas venue me déranger.

Pour ma seconde étape, j'ai été hébergé par un triathlète super-sympa rencontré sur la route. Impressionnant, le bonhomme a 56 ans et a participé deux fois au IronMan de Hawaï.  Il habitait du côté de Vevey, en bordure du Lac Léman. Un bien joli coin, avec une vue splendide sur les Alpes!

J'ai finalement atteint Genève le lendemain. Il était temps de reprendre des forces en mangeant un peu de chocolat! (Remarque: et non, ma tuque Arc'teryx Molly and Moe ne me quitte jamais. Je vous écrirai pourquoi, un jour.)

	Arc'teryx Phase AR Crew Ls pour homme et femme Parfaite couche de base pour gérer l'humidité efficacement quand j'alterne les ascensions de sommets et les longues descentes. Je profite donc du savoir-faire légendaire d'Arc'teryx en ce qui a trait au tissage. Celui-ci est conçu exprès pour expulser ma sueur, me gardant confortablement au sec. J'aime sa coupe ajustée à tous les niveaux. Utile quand on le porte directement sur la peau. J'aime moins le fait que la fibre synthétique prenne les odeurs après une journée complète d'utilisation vs le mérinos, qui gère mieux cet aspect. À éviter lors d'une randonnée de plusieurs jours avec des amis.
	Icebreaker Leggings BodyFit 200 avec braguette pour homme et Bodyfit 200 pour femme Si je pouvais porter seulement ce legging dans mon quotidien sans me faire juger, je le ferais. L'ajustement parfait autant aux chevilles qu'à la taille combiné avec la douceur de la laine mérinos et l'épaisseur intermédiaire (200) d'Icebreaker me force presque à choisir ces combines pour toutes mes activités hivernales.
	Icebreaker bas Skier+ Mid pour homme et femme « Des bas c'est des bas » me dites-vous? Non. Ces bas sont une œuvre d'art dont l'épaisseur, la texture et la résistance varient d'une partie à l'autre pour fournir l'isolation, la gestion de sueur et le cousinage souhaités. Vous ne comprenez pas encore l'avantage du mérinos vs le coton? Je suggère de commencer par une paire de bas comme ceux-ci. Ils ne sont pas trop chers et on sent rapidement la différence. Je me permets de rappeler qu'il y a plusieurs épaisseurs de ce modèle : plus vous avez chaud et suez facilement des pieds, plus mince sera votre bas.
	Arc'teryx Delta SV Jacket Attention à la maison : ne portez jamais cette laine polaire sous un manteau s'il le thermostat indique plus de -15°C en revanche, elle sera votre meilleure amie si vous avez un besoin urgent de vous réchauffer. J'ai celle-ci depuis 3 ans et son pelage est encore doux comme un lapin (mâle, chasseur et un peu âgé quand même). Des versions du Delta moins isolantes existent aussi avec le AR (All Round) et le LT (Light) vs SV (Severe). Une bonne alternative au Delta SV serait les vestes Monkey Man et Monkey Woman de Mountain Hardwear
	Patagonia Pantalon Backcountry Guide pour homme et femme Ces pantalons sont parfaits pour le ski hors pistes puisqu'ils sont extensibles, plus résistants au niveau des genoux et des fesses, possèdent des guêtres intégrées et des bretelles qui les garderont en place même si je décidais de skier dans un mètre de poudreuse. Parfait pour le ski d'aventure. Par contre, le simple petit fini brossé risque de nécessiter le port d'un pantalon plus isolant, comme les Arc'teryx Rho AR, dans le cas où je devrais monter la piste à pied.
	Oakley O Frame Snow J'aime ces lunettes parce que : 1. L'air ne passe pas nulle part. 2. Elles s'imbriquent parfaitement avec mon casque sans laisser de points froids. 3. parce que la lentille jaune m'aide à voir quand il neige ou quand il fait nuit (les deux situations dans lesquelles je suis le plus susceptible de skier). J'aurais peut-être besoin d'une lentille foncée pour les journées ensoleillées mas je n'ai jamais le temps magasiner.
	The North Face Manteau Shekter pour homme Ce manteau est ma pièce coup de cœur de l'année. Il est beau et a tout ce que je recherche dans un manteau de ski : il est imperméable (parfait pour notre hiver en dents de scie), extensible et juste assez isolé. Son isolation en synthétique et ses efficaces trappes à air sous les bras et omoplates optimise son efficacité lorsqu'utilisé pour des activités plus aérobiques. Après de longues années de progression, j'ai l'impression que The North Face a enfin créé un grand classique de ski plutôt que de nous proposer des adaptations de manteaux d'expédition. D'ailleurs, le Shekter a des frères et soeurs de la même trempe dans la ligne HN24 : le Svante pour homme et les Diedre et Greta pour femme. Ce n'est pas pour rien qu'ils habillent toute l'équipe américaine de ski acrobatique.
	Gants Beta AR d'Ac'teryx (très comparables aux nouveaux Zenta AR pour homme et femme) J'avais déjà testé ces gants dans la chronique suivante qui ont changé de nom cette année. Certains petits détails ont aussi changé, mais ce n'est rien pour écrire à sa mère. En bref, les gants Beta AR ou Zenta AR sont très bien isolés, résistants, permettent de garder une impressionnante dextérité et s'ajustent rapidement et facilement. Ils sont beaucoup plus chers que d'autres gants de leur catégorie, mais ce sont les meilleurs pour le skieur dans nos hivers québécois à mon avis. Si je planifie de faire du ski d'aventure ou simplement dans un endroit moins froid, je vais opter pour des gants moins isolés ou des gants trois en un, comme le gant Venta SV d'Arc'teryx.
	Burton [Ak] 23L Pack Je viens de me procurer ce sac. De prime à bord, il semble confortable et construit avec les excellentes normes de qualités Burton. On peut porter des skis ou une planche à neige avec et on peut y mettre l'essentiel pour ne journée de ski hors-piste (lunch, petit vêtement d'appoint, sac d'hydratation, pelle, sonde, etc.) La ceinture de taille est un peu simpliste vs d'autres modèles du même genre, mais je ne crois pas que cela ait une grande importance puisque sa fonction n'est pas de supporter le poids sur les hanches, mais plutôt de stabiliser le sac sur le dos.

Arcteryx Men's Ventii Jacket

You might be wondering why very few will be made. The answer is simple. Arc’teryx has made the best ski jacket possible and it’s actually costing them too much. That’s right get your hands on this more than fantastic jacket that Arc’teryx can’t afford to make anymore.

The review of the Ventii will be separated into sections, fit, features, looks & feel.

Fit

Fit wise, the Arc’teryx Ventii is like the proverbial glove. Not only is its cut spot on, but it is complimented by the fact that the Gore-Tex Pro-Shell has stretch. This had me raise an eyebrow as it is very rare for Pro-Shell to be stretchy. In fact, it is the only Arc’teryx jacket that has it; that is a bit of a shame because it made for fantastic mobility, as did the great articulation Arc’teryx is know for. It is quite rare for an insulated jacket to allow such nimbleness. Don’t go expecting something to do yoga with though, the stretch is just right for you to go all out when you’re skiing.

Beyond that, the cut has what Arc’teryx calls its Fit Trim. Aptly named, it is indeed close to the body. I quite liked that aspect. I would say it is true to size, however if you’re debating or planning on wearing thick mid-layers, do order I size larger than usual. With 80g of Coreloft, you won’t be needing to layer-up too often though.

Features

The Arc’teryx Ventii is rich in features. First of all, concerning versatility, you’ll be happy to note that the snow skirt is not only elastic but also removable. Great for those times you’re wearing the jacket but not actually skiing. Also removable is the insulated hood. I was happy to note that it is subtle in that ability, in that the zipper and buttons to do so are well hidden, keeping a smooth look. Of course, the hood also has the legendary Arc’teryx fit and adjustability. The collar fit just right, being neither too high nor too low. Continuing with the snowsport features, there is also the hidden Recco® reflector. The fact it is hidden is appreciated at it keeps the jacket’s look elegant.

Moving lower down the jacket, you’ll appreaciate the webbed pit-zips. The zips are there to help vent and avoid you overheating while the webbing is there to block any snow from coming in. All zippers are of the WaterTight polyurethane coated variety. The zipper tab on the main zipper has a nice sturdy feel to it.

In the realm of pockets, the Ventii excels too. On the outside, it has a pocket at the wrist and two hand pockets at the waist. Inside you’ll find one zippered pocket as well as a double mesh pocket, which are one on top of the other or rather that one is in front of the other, depending on your perspective. The larger of the two is attached at the center, while the slightly smaller is of a classic drop-in configuration. Weatherwise, as mentioned previously its Gore-Tex Pro Shell has a waterproof-breathable membrane which is also windproof and stretchable, while its 80g of Coreloft will keep you warm on the downhill and on your way up.

Finally, the Ventii has adjustable slim-fit cuffs with Velcro® closures. The slim fit indicates that at the wrist, the jacket become very thin. I really appreciated that feature as the lesser bulk made it easier to negotiate putting on my gloves properly.

Look & Feel

Elegance and simplicity are this ski jacket’s calling card. Its slim fit makes sure that applies to you too. Its line across the upper arms and shoulders add a touch of dynamicity. The outside fabric is soft yet tough. Inside, you’ll find a variety of luxurious fabrics. The sleeves have a sleek texture allowing you to smoothly put in your arms without having your base layer sleeves ride up. At the shoulders there are two blades of soft fleece whereas the rest of the torso has a noble feel of a very soft, very fine fleece, for lack of a better word.

Conclusion

The Arc’teryx Ventii is the ideal jacket for the most demanding of skiers. Is it worth over 1000$? That really depends on what 1000$ is worth to you. How much do you value having the best? Built with the choicest materials and a master’s attention to detail, the Arc'teryx will suit you so well you won’t notice it until someone pays you a compliment. Get one while you still can.

Ski season is in full swing. You might have some ratty old gear that needs to be changed. Now's the perfect time for that! From baby's to men, there's something for everyone.

So what did you think of it?

I enjoyed it. I must admit that I've been to Bariloche and on one of the mountains I've had my best snowboard day. In fact, the powder was deep and fluffy that it was one of the best days of my life. Back to the movie. I liked, of course, the scenery. I thought some of the shots were quite nice. I liked the use of the stop-motion hyper-exposures at night and in the mountain hut. Actually, it might not be stop-motion, it just looks like that because of the quickness of the brighter lights. I was both annoyed by the music and thought it worked really well. It's just that I felt that I've already heard I'm-such-a-sensitive-man music like this before. But I did cracked for the "going to San Pedro". Finally, I also enjoyed the playful nudity. I like to think that people into the outdoors are a little more comfortable with their bodies and understand context is everything. I say more fun butts!

Last year Arc’teryx revolutionized the construction of gloves. This year they have perfected it. 200 grams of Primaloft make this a warm glove to be reckoned with. The lavish leather palm and finger tips create unsurpassed tactility as well as durability. However to add breathability and comfort to the glove they went with a nice softshell fabric for the back of the hand. Perfect length for skiing or any snowsport where keeping the snow out is a pre-requisite. Did I mention it is full Gore-Tex?

2. Icebreaker LS Pursuit Zip

Tired of hearing about Merino wool? Too bad, it is the best stuff on earth. What could be better you ask? What if they add 3% Lycra to add that extra stretch you oh so pray for when in the crux of an ice climbing pitch you have to do a high-step. No problemo with their GT line because that Lycra helps you move even more freely. Zip neck lets you regulate your temperature more easily, and the thumb loops keep the sleeves where they should be. Now if only I could get a six-pack so I could wear this in public…

3. Oakley Crowbar (Hot Pink). For women (or adventurous men)

Style and class isn’t just reserved for first class passengers. Get a pair of these babies and you will be riding high next time you hit the slopes. They are super comfortable with or without a helmet, and most importantly are a great size- goggles seem to be on steroids these days. It fits over the face perfectly, and does not gobble it up like some bigger models. But most important it comes with the beautiful VR50 Pink Iridium lens. The iridium coating blocks glare and heightens the contrast on the hill. No more flat light sneaking up on you.

4. The North Face Base Camp Gear Box

The base camp duffel line has been around for years. The fabric is tough and waterproof (seems are not sealed so don’t go scuba diving with it please). Ajustement

La Citadel de Canada Goose a l'apparence d’un manteau d’expédition dont il s’inspire mais il a été conçu à la base pour la ville. Ceci explique surement sa coupe plus ajustée, il est en effet taillé assez serré. Si vous êtes à la recherche d'un tel ajustement, commandez dès maintenant votre taille habituelle et vous serez ravi du résultat. Si vous n'êtes pas sûr, je vous recommande de choisir une taille au dessus.

Le Khuno d’Arc'teryx, quant à lui, a une coupe plus régulière. Vous pouvez commander votre taille normale sans hésiter.

Similitudes

Chacune dotée d’un capuchon, vous ne pouvez pas vous tromper pour vous garder bien au chaud de part leur isolation, bien que la Khuno le soit légèrement plus. Comme ils sont réglables, cela fait une grande différence pour l’apparence de votre tête, et donne une sensation de chaleur pour votre corps. La Citadel de Canada Goose et la Khuno d’Arc'teryx sont également équipés d’une glissière frontale avec rabat coupe-vent qui protège le menton. Les deux parkas sont assez longues, assurant une couverture complète du siège, vous donnant ainsi une protection optimale du corps quasi-complète, tout en permettant une liberté pour marcher.

Conclusion

En termes de fonctionnalités, ces deux parkas sont assez semblables et en tant que manteaux d'hiver, vous serviront admirablement bien. Peut-être que leur plus grand élément distinctif est leur apparence. Dans ce domaine, ils sont assez différents : La Citadel de Canada Goose a une forte carrure quasi-militaire tandis que la Khuno d’Arc'teryx a un look plus sportif. Même si elle est effectivement beaucoup plus légère, elle est aussi respirante et résistante, donc sur l'ensemble, un meilleur choix pour les personnes actives. Les deux marques sont bien respectées et prestigieuses afin que vous ne vous trompiez vraiment pas. À ce stade, vous pouvez vous sentir en sécurité et simplement décider quel aspect vous préférez. Ironiquement, alors que l'apparence de la Citadel est un peu plus agressive de par son style que l’on a plus l’habitude de voir dans les rues, l'apparence plus douce de la Khuno pourrait vous permettre d’être plus remarqué!

Similarities

Straight off, these are superb winter-time shells. You can wear them in the summer of course, but they’re made ready for snow time. They both have that smooth hardshell feel, although the Patagonia is a little rougher. Rougher in a good way. It feels a little burlier. It’s just a feeling since Arc’teryx jackets are second to none in durability. Both are made to keep you dry and their adjustable hoods, hems and cuffs, water-resistant zippers make sure the GORE-TEX® Pro Shell does just that.

Fit

The Rush is described by Arc’teryx as having an expedition fit. Trying it on contradicts that. It has a classic Arc’teryx Alpha fit. That means trim. If you plan on layering or are hesitating, you should get a size larger. The same fit suggestion applies to the Patagonia Super Alpine, which is climbing-short in the front.

Conclusion

The Arc’teryx Rush is more ski-specific while the Patagonia Super Alpine is more climbing specific. Either way, you’re getting top notch jackets. The Arc’teryx gets extra marks for it’s ski skirt which also double as a wind skirt and which I prefer to the adjustable hem the Patagonia offers especially since the Arc’teryx has that too. Pocket wise, the Rush also excels since it has a sleeve pocket as well as two interior pockets. Both usable, unlike the Patagonia’s interior pocket which is oddly shaped and too small to fit a wallet. But with it’s pleated chest pocket, the Super Alpine’s no slouch in the pocket department either. It makes for a perfect pocket since it lies flat when empty yet becomes cavernous when comes time for storage.

I also liked its cuff gasket. It’ll make it easier to keep the wind out.They stay top-notch in the hood department with their 3D adjustments. I prefered the Patagonia, if only for their nifty Touch Point System™ which makes it so much easier to slacken the points.

In the end, they both make you go wow when you wear them. The Arc’teryx has the snow-skirt and is richer in pockets whereas as the Patagonia has the sweet cord locks, wrist gaskets and accordeon pockets. It comes down to which features you value more.

Fit

The Canada Goose Citadel has the look of an expedition grade jacket, however, it was designed for the city. In that way, it has a slim fit, it is cut quite tight. If you are looking for such a fit, order your regular size. If you are unsure, I would recommend you order a size up.

The Arc’teryx Khuno is has a more regular fit. You should order your regular size.

Similarities

Hood-wise, you can’t go wrong with either of them as they areinsulated, although the Khuno’s is more so. They are also adjustable, which makes a big difference in keeping your head, and thus your body warm. The Canada Goose Citadel and Arc’teryx Khuno are also equipped with wind flaps at the full-length zippers (which have chin guards). Both parkas are quite long, assuring full seat coverage, thereby giving you an optimal near-full body protection while allowing decent mobility.

Conclusion

In terms of features, they are actually quite similar and as far as winter jackets, both will serve you equally well. Perhaps their greatest distinguishing element is their look. In that domain, they are rather different. The Canada Goose Citadel has a burly, quasi-military look while the Arc’teryx Khuno, has a lighter, more sporty look. While it is indeed quite a lot lighter, it is still very strong and resistant, so over all, a better choice for active people. Both brands are well respected and prestigious so you really can't go wrong. At this point, you can feel safe in merely deciding which look you prefer. Ironically, while the Citadel's appearance is more aggressive, because it is a style seen much more often on the streets, the Khuno's softer appearance might get you more noticed.

The Rush is newest arrival in the ski and snowboard line by prestigious Canadian company, Arc'teryx. This snowsport-specific waterproof-breathable shell combines suppleness, an athletic and pre-articulated cut, quality fabrication, extreme durability and any other attribute you'll be looking for. Most of all though, it has style; after all, Arc'teryx has been a pionneer in the colours it uses and since its beginning. That still remains true to this day.

Who else but Oakley would manage to innovate the world of goggles? With is new Airbrake series and its SwitchLock™ system, Oakley allows you to easily and quickly change your lens. You will thusly be able to go from a snowy morning to a bright afternoon all the while keeping your vision optimal. In fact, the goggles comes with two different lenses. Speaking of optimal lenses, you won't need to twist your goggles to insert a new lens. That avoids visual distortions caused by a badly installed lens. Anyways, they must be pretty decent if Shaun White wears them.

By now you know that I love gloves. You should also know that Black Diamond has been making excellent gloves for many years now. The Arc'teryx Sylva is a marvellous coat. It feels quite light yet will keep you quite warm as well. Its lines are simple and elegant. All in all it's a flattering winter jacket that will be great for the woman about town. Also, since it has a synthetic insulation rather than down, it is much slimmer, which helps explain the the nice silhouette it gives.

Nous avons été très contents de la participation. Un bon nombre d'entre vous sont venus, ce que nous avons apprécié, surtout que c'était le premier évènement officiel à la boutique St-Denis depuis ses grandes rénovations. L'environnement revampé était idéal pour présenter la nouvelle ligne de ski superbe d'Arc'teryx ainsi que les voyages héli-ski fantastiques de CMH. D'ailleurs, difficile de dire ce qui a plus impressionné. Les manteaux et pantalons Arc'teryx conçus pour le ski représentent véritablement ce qui se fait de mieux au monde. Mais les aventures héli-ski de CMH, eh bien, paradis blanc ne serait pas trop exagéré comme description en deux mots.

En plus de ça, tout le monde a été comblé de la délicieuse nourriture fournie par Lallouz.
