The first snowfall of 2010 was the perfect opportunity to take a hike and try out Arc’teryx’s Atom LT Hoody. The air was windy and cold, around 0ºC. The sky was overcast and grey; it threatened to snow again. What a way to spend a day in nature’s playground!

I left with the basics (all by Arc’teryx): the Tau Pullover, the Alpha LT jacket, the Atom LT Hoody, and a LT lunch (LT means light in Arc’teryx language). I move fast and generate a lot of heat when I hike so I kept on the Tau Pullover and put the other two jackets in my bag. The first thing I noticed about the Atom LT Hoody was its compressibility. It takes up about 30% less space than a fleece of the same warmth.

Les premiers centimètres de neige de 2010… l’occasion idéale pour mettre du nouvel équipement à l’épreuve! Randonnée d’une journée par un ciel venteux et couvert qui menaçait de délester encore quelques précipitations supplémentaires… Un terrain de jeu intéressant en perspective… avec un mercure tout juste en deçà de zéro.

Je suis donc parti léger avec la base : Tau Pullover, Alpha LT (au cas où) [NDLR : LT pour light, léger], le Atom LT Hoody d’Arc’teryx à tester et… un lunch LT. Comme je carbure habituellement à gros régime, j’ai laissé le Atom LT Hoody et le reste attendre leur tour dans le coin de mon sac. Première observation : ça se compresse très efficacement. Je dirais environ 30% plus qu’une laine polaire de même catégorie.

The North Face Redpoint Optimus Jacket became an employee favourite a couple years ago, when we first discovered Primaloft, the best synthetic insulation on the market and the closest imitation of down available. Well-loved because it is very breathable, very light, dries quickly, and efficiently stores your body’s generated heat, this insulation regulates body temperature during drastic temperature changes, such as going from inside to outside. What’s more, a thinner layer of Primaloft is required to obtain the same warmth as down and it keeps you warmer even when wet or damp.
