Un vernissage c'est une occasion hors-pair de pouvoir voir une exposition d'art dans une atmosphère des plus conviviales. Boisson alcoolisées et amuse-gueules sont au rendez-vous aussi, pour agrémenter le tout. Ainsi, vous pouvez combler l'essential des besoins de l'existence humaine: esprit, social, physique. Quoi de mieux? C'est ainsi que pour vous inciter à vernir découvrir ses tableaux, Dave Todaro fera un vernissage samedi le 17 septembre 2011, de 16h à 19h.

Painting in The Great Outdoors: Mark Gustav Zimmerl’s Vernissage

From the breathtaking beauty of a golden sunrise to the grandeur of the snow-capped mountain peaks, nature can be a true inspiration by its raw beauty and splendor. Last week, I had the pleasure to visit Mark Gustav Zimmerl’s vernissage, who bases his work on various natural landscapes.

The Vernissage

I had never been to an actual vernissage, so I was pretty stoked to see the exhibition. Although the paintings look great in pictures, it’s a whole other game to be standing in front of a work of art, seeing through the lens of the artist. You get to distinguish all the details and the work that has been put in every single stroke, and you are absorbed by the realness of it all. I especially enjoyed the touch of pink in the paintings, created by having the base layer painted in this colour. Makes me want to pick up my paintbrush again (I used to paint back in the day)! I am certainly looking forward to his next exhibition.

A little bit about the artist

Known as Shaggy throughout the ultimate frisbee community because of his wild golden locks, Mark is the captain of Mephisto and one of the best players in Canada. So it was to my surprise to learn that he is also a talented artist off the field.

He grew up in Montreal and spent nearly every weekend in the Laurentians as a child, exploring the woods. He graduated from Concordia University in 1992 with a Bachelor in Fine Arts, and in 1995 with a Diploma in Education in the Arts at McGill. He then went on teaching art in high school until 2003, and since then, has been totally devoted to painting.

About painting outside

“ I paint outside up until a certain point and winter certainly presents some challenges. Compared to some of the painters that introduced me to painting "en plein air" I'm not very tough. I lose feeling in my fingers pretty quickly when it's cold and windy. I also work from my photographs so I still get work done when it's cold. I just prefer to be outside if I have the choice (and yes I wear gloves and merino wool and ski pants and a huge down jacket.) So the smaller panels are ideally done outside, and all the larger canvases are painted back in the studio.”

“ Why do I like/paint the outdoors so much? When I'm out in nature I feel most at peace. I don't have to explain that to anyone, but I recognize that it is a powerful experience for me. Painting the scenes and locations that have moved me connects me to that experience. I paint other things as well: urban scenes, portraits, animals... I just always come back to the landscape. ”

The future

Next year, Mark plans on phasing out ultimate frisbee for a bit and heading out to the west coast to work.

Pour ceux qui s’intéressent à l'impact qu'on a sur l’environnement en tant habitant d'une ville, l'Écomusée du fier monde et le Centre d’Écologie Urbaine présente la dernière partie de leur exposition de trois parties : Habiter une ville durable. L'expo porte un regard sur trois thématiques : le transport, le logement et la consommation, ainsi que les choix qu'on fait dans chacune de ces thématiques au niveau individuel, collectif et gouvernemental.

Cette troisième exposition complète les deux autres. La première constatait le présent à Montréal, la deuxième nous donnait des outils inspirés sur les bons coups d'ici et ailleurs. Maintenant ils « rêvent le possible » pour Montréal avec des témoignages de Montréalais pris pendant une exposition itinérante l’année dernière. Une expo qui fait réfléchir ; elle est plus que pertinente concernant notre milieu urbain. Ça prend place dans le lumineux Écomusée, qui se trouve là où était le bain Généreux, dans un excellent exemple de rénovation et de la préservation du patrimoine.

L’exposition se poursuit jusqu'au 13 juin.

Dave Altitude est un homme complexe. Un homme polyvalent. Non seulement est-ce qu'il est le Dave Altitude que l'on connaît et que l'on aime en tant que blogueur, photographe et créateur de contenu chez altitude-sports.com, mais il est aussi un peintre très talentueux connu sous le nom de Dave Todaro.

C'est pour ça que nous sommes très heureux de vous inviter à son vernissage où il présentera sa nouvelle collection.
