This winter I decided to put together a list of some of the most useful gear I have, and package it as a suggested gift guide. Here you’ll find a number of items that surprisingly many people still don’t own. The gifts I suggest are all things that I didn’t appreciate before I got one, but that have since become a permanent resident of my backpack or car trunk. I also limited the list to only items that are fun to receive. You won’t find spare batteries, camp suds, or water repellent spray in this list, only cool toys.

20$-30$ Opinel Knife

This knife has been around since the 1800s and has been an outdoorsmen’s basic tool from the start. Back in the pre-gore tex days of external frame backpacks and triangular tents, my parents always had an Opinel handy on Canoe trips. For the past 18 years now, I have had my own and I can confirm one thing: they last forever. They hold a good edge and they are indestructible. But most importantly, they are super light, which makes this item (along with a waterproof lighter) a permanent resident of my pant pocket.

Suggestion: Opinel Classic Stainless Steel #8 ($19.99)

25$-100$ Headlamp

If you know someone that doesn’t have one of these yet, do them a favor and offer it as a gift. It’s plain and simple: handheld flashlights are over. Why would you carry around a big stick when you can free your hands with one of these? Side note: like most geometric objects, you can also hold a headlamp in your hands if that’s what you want to do.

For less than thirty bucks, you can get the Petzl e+LITE™. It’s tiny and weighs absolutely nothing (28g or roughly the mass of an AA battery). I keep one in my bag at all times as part of my safety equipment. On day trips, it can be a life saver if you get delayed past sundown. On longer trips, it’s a good backup light, just-in-case –and I have needed it.

For long evenings around the campfire or getting around in the woods, stronger lights are great. I use mine all the time, especially for cross country skiing after work on Mt Royal (when it gets dark at 4, you can get the quiet mystique feeling of the nighttime forest without having to stay up super late, and what a view when you get to the Belvedere!).

40$-150$ Camping Stove

The problem with this gift is that those who need it already have it, and those who don’t have it don’t need it. But that’s not exactly true. Here are three options for the different types of campers:

Don’t have a stove: Those who don’t have a stove should learn the joys of cooking in the fresh air, but let’s keep it light, simple and efficient. The MSR Reactor Stove System™ is a complete, self-contained pot+stove system that packs small and cooks incredibly fast. It’s perfect for boiling river water (which disinfects it) for dehydrated foods bags. Buy them this stove and a food pack and maybe an acetal spoon and voilà! Your city dweller can cook a picnic on a hike or a camping supper.

Have a stove: If your close one has a coleman-style two-burner cooker, he/she deserves something that they can take in a backpack. At just 85g, you’d sweat it’s made of air, but it’s quick and efficient when it comes to boiling water. This is my summer go-to. It lives in my pot set.

50$-150$ Collapsible Poles

Useful for walking and snowshoeing, as well as for pitching an impromptu shelter with a poncho and string, there are still surprisingly many people who don’t own a pair of these. They’re good for stability on a steep hike and are key for keeping your balance while snowshoeing before you get used to your oversized footprint. They hang out in my trunk with my snowshoes. I also find mine useful for backcountry skiing, where I like to adjust my pole length based on the terrain.

Suggestion: Black Diamond Trail Shock ($89.99)

150$-300$ Snowshoes

The greatest thing about snowshoes is that 1) anybody can use them, and 2) they open up new possible activities. Why should you stop hiking just because there’s snow on the ground? And why shouldn’t you be able to reach that little lookout picnic place you like in the winter? As a cross-country skier I always shunned snowshoes as too slow to be any fun… until I tried them. Turns out it’s a great feeling to be able to walk anywhere you want in the forest; you’re even freer than in the summer when the underbrush constricts movement. I keep my snowshoes in my trunk all winter and strap them on whenever I see something I want to explore.

Multiply the number of boxes under the tree by getting tails! If you plan to walk in deep powdery snow, or with a heavy backpack, they are great tools to expand your footprint.

220$-350$ Down sweater

The most underrated piece of equipment. Ever! The down sweater is my most prized and newest find. It’s like a puffy down coat, but the size of a sweater. Like a sweater, it’ll fit under any jacket, and like a down coat, it’s massively warm. Mountain Hardwear, Outdoor Research and Pantagonia make excellent ones.

In the early winter, when it is still only chilly (-5 to 10 C), you can use this as a stylish jacket. But what this is really useful for is as pocket-sized extra backup warmth. Unlike a fleece sweater, these pack tightly into a tiny little ball and weigh almost nothing. I keep mine in my bag all winter long. It’s always ready to pull out whenever somebody is cold. (You get quite popular fast when you have warmth to share.) Snowshoeing and want to stop for a picnic? Slip in right on. Or perhaps you’re cross-country skiing? Not to worry, it’ll fit in your fanny pack without weighing it down. I honestly don’t know how I lived without one.

Suggestion: Patagonia Down Sweater ($217.99)

Advice and warning
Some pieces are practically new. If you're looking to equip yourself at a low cost, it's now or never. We recommend you get there early since quantities are limited and we'll be operating on a first-come, first-serve basis. Take of advantage of Aux Co'Pains D'Abord bakery's proximity to grab a coffee and croissant. They're on Rachel, corner Rivard. It'll make the wait seem shorter. Finally, we will not be renting out the entirety of this summer's rental range.

Similarities

First of all, they’re all very warm winter jackets with down insulation, the best insulation on the market. Second, they’re made for an urban use, for getting around town. Third, they are all long, offering great coverage, down to the knee. Fourth, they all have removable hoods.

Differences

That’s where similarities end and the differences start. They all have a removable fur trim, except for Metropolis, which does not have a fur trim on the hood. The Kensington is the only one that uses real fur, coyote fur in this case.

Both the Arctic Parka and Canada Goose Kensington are windproof, making them better suited to the worst winter can offer. It’s not that they are warmer but that they protect you against the elements better. The Arctic Parka is also waterproof, making it the most versatile of the bunch as the down will be protected in the event of a downpour.

Lofty Down

Speaking of down, here are their loft ratings: Arctic Parka 550, Metropolis 600, Kensington 625, Downtown 650. If you want to learn more about down and loft, please head here. In the meantime, these numbers simply indicate the space an ounce of down takes. The higher the number, the better the down in that it takes less of it for an equivalent amount of weight. This reduces the weight of the garment but also increases the volume.

Now let’s check out additional specifications. Both the Kensington and Downtown have elastic cuffs. The Arctic Parka’s are adjustable, as are the Kensington’s.

Pocket wise, both the Arctic Parka and Kensington have four pockets up front. The Kensington’s chest pockets are rather small though, limiting their use. All jackets have a fleece lining, but the Kensington’s are softer. The Downtown and Metropolis have two hand pockets each. The Metropolis’ are quite roomy. However the fleece lining is only on one side.

Moving inside, they all have pockets except for the Kensington. Both the Arctic Parka and Metropolis have interior media pockets with an exit for an earphone cord, whereas the Downtown’s is just a simple pocket with a zipper.

Catherine, our tester (and resident climbing champion), felt the Kensington had the most flattering fit but that the Downtown was the lightest and most comfortable.

Le classique imper The North Face! Le Venture vous garde aussi sec qu’une princesse avec son tissu Hyvent DT et ces coutures thermo-soudées. Ce morceau a toutes les spécificités d’un bon manteau de pluie technique, à un prix qui saura sans doute vous plaire. Un capuchon ajustable, un réglage en velcro au poignet, des fermetures éclaires pour aération sous les aisselles, un tissu tout doux au niveau du menton, et le tour est joué! Est-ce que j’ai mentionné que le Venture a des poches intérieures en mailles? Et bien oui je vous le confirme!

4) The North Face Blue Ridge Paclite 279.99$

Le nom le dit bien : le Blue Ridge est léger léger! Cette coquille présente toute la performance que vous souhaitez, dans le petit paquet mignon que vous désirez. Vous serez heureux comme un poisson dans l’eau avec la membrane Gore-Tex Paclite (la plus légères de toute la série), le capuchon ajustable, les fermetures éclaires en polyuréthane, et les fentes d’aération centrales pour évacuer tout excédent de chaleur. Ni trop serré, ni trop lousse, ce manteau présente une coupe sportive comme on les aime! Le Blue Ridge sera votre meilleur allié quand l’espace est restreint, mais que la performance ne peut être mise de côté.

3) Arc’teryx Alpha LT 549.99$

Arc’teryx a une réputation pour la confection de produits impeccables, et l’Alpha LT n’est pas une exception à la règle. J’en suis complètement gaga, mais laissez-moi vous expliquez pourquoi ce manteau est si fantastique, surtout pour les grimpeurs de ce monde; chaque petit détail a été calculé afin de simplifier votre vie, surtout dans les situations les plus ardues. En plus de sa coupe étonnement ergonomique, l’Alpha LT a une membrane Gore-Tex Pro Shell, un capuchon compatible avec un casque, des insertions HemLock amovibles pour harnais, et tout plein d’autres caractéristiques incroyables. C’est vraiment la crème de la crème des impers légers!

Vous vous sentirez comme une star avec ce manteau de pluie déguisé en trench-coat fashion. Si vous désirez rester au sec, sans toutefois être obligé de porter des vêtements sport, alors le Stella Grace est fait pour vous. Ce manteau est complètement imperméable, a des coutures scellées, en plus de posséder un capuchon bien pratique. Vous pourrez ajuster le manteau à vos besoins grâce à la ceinture à la taille, la fermeture éclaire à côtés doubles et les ajustements en goussets aux poignets. En ce qui concerne le rangement, vous n’aurez aucun problème à ranger tous vos accessoires dans les 5 poches du manteau.

1) Mountain Hardwear Epic Jacket 139.99$

Mais, ce manteau ne peut être un vêtement de pluie s’il n’a pas de capuchon?! Détrompez-vous mes enfants! Cette troisième couche épique abrite un capuchon Ergo escamotable, et vous surprendra par son élégance. Ce morceau est étonnement léger pour tous les attributs qu’il comporte : Extérieur en nylon ripstop, poches à fond en résille pour aération, une poche poitrine, rabat laminé au poignet… Tout ça et il fait comme un gant pour la forme féminine, contrairement à d’autres manteaux qui sont coupés comme un sac de poubelle.

A North Face grand classic! The Venture keeps you out of the rain with its Hyvent DT fabric, but I don’t guarantee that it will keep you out of trouble. It’s got all the features of a good technical rain jacket, at the price of faux ruby red fancy drop earrings, a recheargable beaded butterfly, or 150 knickknacks at the dollar store. Adjustable hood and cuff tabs, pit-zip vents for the sweaty type, soft chin guard lining, hem cinch cord, you name it! Oh! And did I mention the Venture has got inside mesh pockets too? I didn’t think so!

4) The North Face Blue Ridge Paclite 279.99$

Well, the name says it: the Blueridge packs light! FYI, the Blue Ridge Mountains are located in the Appalachians. This shell is all the high performance you’ll need, in the cute, light bundle you want. You’ll be feeling high and dry (in a good way) with the Gore-Tex Paclite (the lightest of the series), the fully adjustable hood, polyurethane zips, core vents and molded cuff tabs. Not too loose and not too tight, the jacket boasts a nice performance fit just like we like ‘em. The Blueridge will be your ultimate best friend when space is of the essence, and performance cannot be compromised.

3) Arc’teryx Alpha LT 549.99$

Arc’teryx has a reputation for producing impeccable products, and the Alpha LT is no exception. Even the rustle of this jacket sounds scrumptious. Enough drooling, let me tell you why this jacket kicks butt, especially for the climbers of this world; every little detail has been carefully calculated to make your life easy when you are in the toughest of situations. Featuring Gore-Tex Pro Shell, a helmet compatible Storm Hood, a harness HemLock at the waist and many other awesome features, the Alpha LT is cut magnificently for a remarkable anatomical fit. This jacket is certainly la crème de la crème of lightweight shells!

You’ll be feeling like a star with this rain jacket disguised as a fashionable trench coat. If you want to stay dry but you’re not a fan of sportswear, then the Stella is made for you. It’s fully waterproof, breathable and seam-sealed, in addition to having a removable hood. You can adjust the fit to your figure with the waist belt, two-way front zip and zip sleeve gussets at the wrists. As for storing your accessories, everything will fit perfectly in the five pockets.

Why, this can’t be a rain jacket if it doesn’t have a hood, can it?! Don’t let yourself be fooled like a kid with a candy bar. This epic jacket swanks a roll-away ergo hood that’ll surprise you with its sleekness. It’s ridiculously light for all the features it packs: lined chin guard, watertight pit, mesh front pockets for ventilation, articulated sleeves, arm pocket and dual hem draw cords… And best of all, it fits the feminine form like a glove, unlike other rain jackets that are cut like a garbage bag.

Softshell ou hardshell ? Coquille ou coquille souple ? Ce sont d'excellentes question. Permettez-moi de vous fournir quelques éléments de base.

A-Les hardshells alias les coquilles imper-respirantes

• Pour la pluie…vêtement de pluie avant tout. Il est facile de faire un tissu imperméable. Il est également facile de faire un tissu respirant. Il est très difficile d’en faire qui soient respirants et imperméables en même temps. D’où l’invention du softshell : on recherche la respirabilité.

• Enduit maison vs Gore-Tex

Gore-Tex se retrouve dans les vêtements haut de gamme et tout ce qui vient avec…technologie, designs, confection etc. Je n’achèterai pas un Gore-Tex uniquement pour cette membrane mais aussi pour le reste de la confection très technique. Les manufacturiers se livrent une bataille pour le parka de montagne le plus technique.
Gore teste les produits avant de les approuver, offre une double garantie, présente un meilleur ratio respirabilité / imperméabilité.

Les enduits maison sont imperméables (ce qui est le but du vêtement) et respirants et offrent un prix plus bas.

Exemples de membranes maisons : The North Face Hyvent, un enduit ou Hyvent Alpha, une membrane. Conduit par Mountain Hardwear.

B-Les softshells ou coquilles souples

• Pour toutes autres activités…80% du temps il fait beau ou ce n’est que de la grisaille

• Le concept original du softshell était de la toile cirée en Angleterre. On n’a pas réinventé la roue !

• Raison de l’élasticité : pour l’escalade ; ça offre une liberté de mouvement sans l’encombrement associé à plus de tissus.

• Softshell original, le Gamma SV par Arcteryx et Malden Powerstretch sans enduit ou membrane.

• Le marché est passé du polar coupe-vent au softshell coupe-vent. On a gagné au passage l’ajout d’un déparlant très efficace.

• Gore a rebaptisé sa technologie « SoftTech » pour « SoftShell »…Un 3 plis avec fini brossé qui le rend plus souple en hiver. Softshell sous autre principe ;  imperméable ET souple.Ex : Mountain Hardwear avec Conduit, (Synchro jacket). Ce sont des imper-respirants et pas des softshells proprement dit.
