They allow you to carry your luggage more easily through rugged paths by evening out the weight on the shoulders and hips. But if you are not planning on venturing into a forest, I highly recomment the rolling luggage.

From backpacker to freeroller

This is not addressed to people out on business trips and all-inclusive vacations that are already fans of rolling bags. These folks have already understood the benefits of this kind of luggage. I am talking to people that are looking for adventure, spontaneity and long trips without necessarily having a huge amount of money on hand. These types of travelers often choose the budget-friendly hotels, restaurants and means of transportation. We often call them backpackers. I have often travelled as one, hurling my backpack around Europe and Asia. I came to the conclusion that this expression should definitely be revised. I am not criticizing the etymology of the term which goes up to the very cool 60’s Hippy Trail. I only believe that too many novice travelers automatically go for backpacks, more often than other guided by clichés. Here is why wheeled-luggage would constitute a better choice for a number of them:

As soon as you arrive at the airport, the backpack becomes an inconvenience; its shoulder straps and slings are just waiting to get stuck in the machinery of the luggage transporters between the plane and the terminal. A number of flight companies even demand that the bags be wrapped in a heavy plastic wrap in order to avoid damage and loss of content, generally at the cost of the traveler. What a way to start a modest vacation!

Wheels facilitate the number one activity of travelers: exploration. When looking for the best place to crash in a new city, they allow you to walk great distances without getting tired. In 99% of towns and villages, good wheels are fully functional. It’s much harder on the morale when you have walked two kilometers the wrong way and you’re shoulders are on fire, your legs are jelly and your back is sweaty.

I think that we should also bust the myth that backpacks are more practical than rolling bags when traveling on a budget. In developed countries, all streets are paved. It’s also simple and easy to carry your luggage in public transit. In developing countries, where infrastructures can be precarious, individual transportation means such as taking the taxi are so cheap that this option becomes realistic and affordable.

In terms of packing, the luggage is in a separate category all together since it opens on its whole width, allowing the traveler to have access to the entire content in one shot. All vacationers know the importance of easily finding their stuff. On the other hand, many backpacks require you to empty a good part of the content in order to get your hands on an object that is located in the middle for example. It’s as though you had to empty your whole drawer every morning and put everything back consequently; blissful vacation!

I can already hear some say: yes but some backpacks have access all along the pack. These kinds of bags have not convinced me in the past. Your clothing is easily accessed; however the shoulder straps and belt are less well adapted than a traditional pack and thus less comfortable.

Are you looking for flexibility while travelling? What’s better than being able to bring a couple pieces of additional clothing that allow you to be more comfortable in a number of situations, without your shoulders paying the price. You’ll enjoy your evening out on the town so much more when you can wear something else than your multi-use pants used the same day while visiting. What’s more, you can take advantage of this on the way back to bring back souvenirs for your loved-ones.

Here's hoping that my comments will help you take a better decision.

Note à l’essai 8/10

-Charles

---

3 Montagnes, 1 but, La Société d’Arthrite – Partagez et économisez

Chuck’s Review – Osprey Hydraform Reservoir Water Pack

Product Reviews

Travel

across country

backpack

biking

camelbak

cycling

hydration

Nalgene

Osprey

I recently switched from a CamelBak to an Osprey water pack while cycling and I am very satisfied with the experience. The mouthpiece is rounded, easy to use and doesn’t drip. I’m especially pleased with the magnetic clip attached to the end (useful when you don’t want your mouthpiece dangling about or when you’re exploring territory you wouldn’t exactly prefer to eat off of). Finally, I’m most impressed with the convenience of the rigid handle, which makes filling up easy at any faucet or fountain.

The Osprey pack is smaller than my last (2 liters instead of 3) so it’s less ideal for touring, but it fits comfortably and the conveniences certainly make up for the smaller capacity.

The Crew

Overall the Osprey Hydraform Reservoir has been a pleasant change and I am extremely happy with the product.

Chuck Cantone

Fixing a flat tire

--

You'll also like:

BIXI is in Town!

How to dress for spring cycling

The North Faced Apex Bionic Produt Review

The Osprey Manta 25 The Perfect Day Pack? Mike and Spud" width="489" height="582" />
Here she is

Not only was the Underhill hike my first real hike of the year, but it was also the first time I would use my new Osprey Manta 25 pack on a true hike. I first saw the Manta series of three packs, the 20, 25 and 30 in stores over the winter and was immediately intrigued buy its array of features. The key attribute is a trampoline style completely aerated back which I hoped would help with my habit of well, sweating profusely from my back, (more on this later.) The pack, which is part of the “Hydraulics” line, also comes equipped with an Osprey “HydraForm” reservoir designed by Osprey and featuring a few nice innovations.

First the reservoir has a rigid spine that runs down its front. This allows it to be easily put in or taken out of the dedicated reservoir compartment on the pack whether or not the pack or the reservoir itself is full. It also has a solid moulded sheet in its back which holds the shape of the pack and hugs your back. The pack also has a nifty elastic system on the left shoulder strap and pack bottom which allows you to, on the fly, secure your hiking poles out of the way to free up your hands. Finally, the reservoir has a great magnetic valve which sticks firmly to the sternum strap on the front of the pack.

I have to say that over all the pack is quite good. As with many pieces of gear it is not the ultimate solution that I hoped it might be, and does not end my search for the perfect day pack, but it is a very good piece of design. The first feature that attracted me to the pack, the airy back panel, was maybe the biggest disappointment but perhaps I expected too much. As I mentioned, I sweat a lot from my back when exercising and when wearing a backpack it only gets worse. I hoped such an open-to-the-air back design would help but ultimately my back was still soaked at the end of the day. I will say, however, that I was not quite as aware that my back was wet during the hike. That damp clammy feeling, which I get with other packs, was much less and it was not until I took the pack off after the hike and felt my back that I realized the extent of the drenching.

Good place for the Manta

The absolute best feature of the pack is the reservoir. Here Osprey hit a home run. Fitting easily into a loaded pack, even another brand without a dedicated compartment, I tried it, it is awesome and it keeps its shape when empty which makes it easy to refill or even to dry. The magnetic clasp to the sternum strap is the best solution to “what the heck to do with the hydration tube” that I have found. I have tried rigging up many of my own solutions: using elastic straps, carabineers or even cutting down the tube length. This, however, does the job very well, keeping it out of your way but easily accessible and it becomes easy to unclip and re-clip without looking down or fumbling. The only gripe with the reservoir is the bite valve itself. It does swivel 180° and switch off which is good but the flow itself is not quite as strong as a Camelback Big Bite Valve making it harder to get a really big gulp of water. Not a big issue but a little annoying when you’re breathing hard and want a quick hydration hit.

The hiking pole holding system seemed like a neat feature as I never hike anywhere without my Komperdell’s and it does work, but the poles, whether collapsed or not, are not exactly out of the way. It is a nice idea though and shows that Osprey really thought things out with this pack, instead of just releasing the same old thing in a new line of colours.

One thing I just don’t like about the Manta is the concave arch it has in its back. I know many Osprey packs with the vented back have this but I think it is time for Osprey to figure out another way of doing things. The overall useful space of the pack is greatly reduced by the way the pack cuts into itself. I have a good sense of pack volumes and 25 litters should have swallowed my day hiking essentials and more but in the end I have less space than with some 20 litter packs. Maybe the 30 litter would have been a better choice but even then the problem would still exist.

<img class="size-large wp-image-8663 " title="The Osprey Manta 25 The Perfect Day Pack? For me hip belt pockets are a must in any pack of any size. The pockets here seemed big enough and were easily used while on the go so this was good, however, the Manta 25 has no padding in the hip belt. Maybe more out of habit than necessity, I missed the padding. The belt did seem to distribute the pack weight well and carried it over my hips properly but a few pieces of padding for comfort, shape and rigidity would be an easy addition and help with long haul comfort. Annoyingly enough, as this is not clear on their website, the Manta 30 does have some small squares of padding in its belt. Basically, I should have bought the 30 litter, but what are you going to do. All and all the Manta 25 is a really good pack that I am sure I will enjoy it for years, but, no, the perfect day pack it is not and I will still be searching until I find, or maybe make, it.

Michael Tauben and Spud the "Tiny Hiker"

Spying on Osprey and Jetboil

What’s New?

Atmos

Aura

Hiking packs

Jetboil

Jetboil PCS

Osprey

Stoves and fuel

Talon

Max and Alex check out Osprey and Jetboil

I kid you! No really, we're nice and honourable people over here at altitude-blog; no spying being done, no siree. What Maxime Altitude and his male model, Alex Altitude, did do is go see Jetboil and Osprey's Andrew Nelson. He graciously showed us some of their wares as well as changes that have been added to an already impressive line-up.

As you'll see, it was a beautiful day at the Outdoor Festival in Montreal.
