August 01, 2011Learning Whitewater Kayaking

Learning Whitewater Kayaking How do you get started in whitewater kayaking if you don’t have any friends to show you the ropes? It took me a while to figure that one out. But I did, and I will now share with you what I found.

I first decided that I wanted to try whitewater kayaking while rafting on the Rivière Rouge. Perhaps you’ve tried the rafting trips offered by the many companies on the Rivière Rouge (ABV, Nouveau Monde, H20, Propulsion, etc…). They’re great fun, and I highly recommend them, but the whole time we were rafting I was fixated by the safety guide following us in his kayak. Inches above the water line, this guy would dive head first in 2m standing waves, return in an eddy and surf the waves with his boat. He would perform flips of all kind, effortlessly burying nose and tail of his boat into the water as he pleased occasionally tipping completely over only to eskimo roll right back up as if nothing had happened. When the sun shined too strong, he’d wet his hair in an eskimo roll. When our raft got stuck on rocks, he’d surf a standing wave while waiting for us.

It. Looked. Awesome.

July 12, 2011Bungee Jumping – Jean-Yves’ Adventures

Bungee Jumping Jean Yves AdventuresThe Leap.

It’s a moment that everyone must go through at least once in their lives. You worked your way up to where you are with a clear objective in mind and you have bold plans. You’ve come a long way, and now it’s time to take a leap of faith. But suddenly, at the critical moment, you find yourself standing at the edge of an abyss, scared to move forward. What’s ahead looks risky. You look back at what’s behind and it seems so safe and familiar. You consider changing course, turning around and sticking to the comfortable life you led before.

May 11, 2010Arundel, QC: Where Old Meets New

Mont-Tremblant recently closed its proverbial doors for the season. It is cold. What isn’t still frozen is muddy. Skiing is over, but those -2 degree mornings keep the bike in the garage. The age old of conundrum: what to do in-between seasons. Up here in Tremblant there are many options when not partaking in outdoor activities. A movie theatre on the mountain provides amusement, a delicious micro-brewery provides libations and succulent chicken burgers, Les Promenades Tremblant (that’s where we are located if you have no heard yet) provides shopping of all kinds, just to name a few. But what is a man (sic) to do athletically speaking? The beautiful shop and its beautiful Icebreaker, Arcteryx and North Face products can only keep me busy five days a week.

Then it struck me. I sell warm clothes. Maybe if I combined my two passions: cycling and outdoor technology, I could get out my bike and start riding on those chilly days. Straight to my wardrobe I went. Icebreaker 150 merino wool base layer (I like the Atlas longsleeve), Arcteryx synthetic midlayer (definitely the Atom LT) and a North Face softshell (my favourite Nimble Jacket) combine to make one warm, highly breathable happy camper (that’s me). Throw in some merino socks and beanie and I’m roaring to go. Now I just need to find 2 other people stupid enough to enjoy riding at zero degrees and I will be out the door.

May 05, 2010Living in a Sustainable City

Living in a city can be quite exciting. There are so many people around and so many things happening. For those interested in our environmental impact as urban denizens, the Écomusée du Fier Monde and the Urban Ecology Centre are currently holding the final, part of their 3 part exhibit entitled Habiter une Ville Durable (Living in a Sustainable City). The exhibit reflects upon three themes, transportation, housing and consumption. It looks at the choices we make within these themes, as individuals, as a collective and at the government level.
