Sporty girls, supporters of ethical brands, fans of athleisure and Tadasana, make room in your closet: Girlfriend Collective has arrived. Launched in 2016, the brand made its mark in the fitness world and covers all the bases of a sought-after clothing company. While high-rise waists, silky textures and compressive fits are greatly appreciated features, their ethical and environmentally-friendly practices are what people find most impressive.

Meet the Girlfriend Behind this Ethical Brand

Ellie Dinh is a Canadian entrepreneur, Creative Director and an active woman. When she met her husband Quang, she moved to Seattle Washington, where Girlfriend Collective began.

The idea behind Girlfriend Collective came from the desire to create a brand that respects the environment as well as people. The company’s direction started taking shape when the couple discovered a polyester made entirely of recycled plastic bottles—a fabric that is both high-performance and eco-friendly. Just like that, Girlfriend Collective was born.

About Girlfriend Collective

Everything took off in 2016 when the brand “broke the internet” by distributing free compression leggings made with 25 post-consumer plastic bottles. The success of the remainder of the collection followed shortly after. The now-prosperous company builds around its values: respecting the community, ethical production, durability, performance and transparency.

Speaking of transparency, Girlfriend Collective has nothing to hide and puts it all out there: videos explaining the clothing’s production process, details concerning the factories and copies of their certifications are on their website—and not even in small print.

Beyond being a sports clothing line, Girlfriend Collective is a community that supports body positivity. The brand advocates for diversity and never alters their models’ bodies on pictures.

Did You Say Ethical Production?

Polyester made from post-consumer plastic, eco-friendly dyes, SA8000 certification ensuring workers receive a fair wage and healthy work environment, leggings made with recycled fishnets and partnerships with ECONYL and Healthy Seas… Girlfriend Collective has a lot to be proud of.

Lost ou damaged fishnets represent approximately 46% of the plastic found in the ocean, and the brand saw an occasion to transform them into clothes. Well done, Girlfriend!
